What Types of Crimes Are Most Common in Tulsa?

Just over 25,000 crimes were reported in Tulsa in 2019, the most recent year for federal data on crime in cities across the country. In Tulsa, as in Oklahoma and the rest of the country, property crimes are far more commonly reported than violent crimes, though incidents like murder and assault are more likely to garner headlines. More than eight in 10 criminal incidents reported in Tulsa in 2019 were property crimes, and larceny-theft alone accounted for more than half of all crimes in the city.

Those numbers equate to a population-adjusted violent crime rate of nearly 900 per 100,000 people and a property crime rate of about 5,300 per 100,000. In both cases, those rates are considerably higher than the corresponding rates for the entire nation. In the U.S., violent crimes occur at a rate of 367 per 100,000 people, while property crimes take place at a rate of about 2,100 per 100,000. So, Tulsa’s crime rates are much higher than the national rates, but this is not out of the ordinary for a major city. Because crime rates are calculated based on population, communities with high population density tend to have higher rates.

Crimes in Tulsa, by number and per 100,000 people

Crime Number Per 100,000 people
All violent crimes 3,964 987
Murder 55 14
Rape 341 85
Robbery 718 179
Aggravated assault 2,850 709
All property crimes 21,336 5,311
Burglary 4,846 1,206
Larceny-theft 13,457 3,350
Motor vehicle theft 3,033 755
Arson 209 52

Among major cities in Oklahoma, Tulsa tends to have higher-than-average rates. Taking into account the 10 biggest cities in the state, Tulsa ranks no lower than third in any individual crime category, and it takes the top spot when it comes to violent crime overall, robbery, aggravated assault, and all types of property crime. The greater metro area, which includes seven counties in the northeastern corner of the state, compares favorably to other major metro areas in the U.S. in most crime categories, ranking outside the top 15 for the majority of crime categories. On the other hand, Tulsa ranks seventh for burglaries and 15th for motor vehicle theft among the 65 largest cities and metro areas in the nation.

Like many other cities, Tulsa has seen certain types of crimes become more common over the past couple of years. For example, according to Tulsa police, the number of homicides in the city rose by nearly 40 percent between 2019 and 2020. Police data also shows that other violent crimes have risen, including aggravated assault, which climbed by 18 percent, and rape, which rose by 10 percent.

On the other hand, most types of property crimes declined over the course of 2020, and in many cases, the number of crimes reported in 2020 represent huge declines during the decade. Robbery and burglary, for example, both declined by almost 20 percent between 2014 and 2020.

It’s important to note that police- and FBI-reported data does not cover closed cases or incidents for which a person was convicted.
